Benefits of NHR Scholarship Germany

Goal of the NHR Graduate School: Fellows are required to visit another NHR host center or an affiliated research organization for a portion of their research outside of their primary NHR center. The research topic at the host center should be related to the fellow’s PhD thesis.

Period of Service: The secondment typically lasts for six months during the fellowship's second year. Fellows must attend on-site at the host center. The stay can be broken up into parts, but each must last at least three months.

Costs being paid for: The NHR host center covers housing, travel, and living expenses. Individual arrangements can be made for special living needs. If the host is an affiliated research organization (not an NHR center), it may not be required to cover expenses. The supervising NHR center and host organization will negotiate financial responsibilities directly.

Finding a Host Center: The right host center or research organization is chosen by the fellow supervisor. In addition, the supervisor oversees the matching procedure and provides the fellow with direction and assistance.

Tips to Win

  • A PhD student must first be accepted by a faculty or department at an NHR host center-affiliated university in order to be eligible.
  • The student has an approved supervisor and a research topic that is in line with NHR research areas, as evidenced by this acceptance.
  • Once accepted, the student must email proof of acceptance to the NHR Office (scholarship@nhr-verein.de) within six months of the scholarship start date.
  • Failure to submit proof within this period may lead to cancellation or disqualification of the scholarship.
  • The NHR scholarship is based on attendance, so you have to be there in person at the designated NHR center.
  • Scholars must spend at least two-thirds of their scholarship period at their supervising NHR center. ( For example: if student is completing their PhD in 36 months, student should be physically present for 24 months)
  • This guarantees active involvement in research, mentoring, and computational resource utilization.
  • Scholarship payments are contingent on the student's residence at the agreed-upon research site.
  • If the scholar does not reside or work in the research location, funds will not be paid.
  • Students should consult the NHR Graduate School guidelines and the official scholarship contract template, both of which can be obtained from the NHR Office, for complete information regarding the rules, responsibilities, and financial terms.
